Texas Pays $230,000 to Settle Lawsuit under the Texas Whistleblower Act

In September 2008, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) settled a suit under the Texas Whistleblower Act filed by former employees William Douglas Bloodworth II and John O'Neill Green.

In exchange for the lawsuit dismissal, the TDCJ agreed to pay Bloodworth $99,000, Green $77,000, and Bloodworth's attorneys Shellist Lazarz, LLP $33,000.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, the TDCJ and plaintiffs, collectively referred to as the "Parties" agreed that all liability is denied. The TDCJ will void all disciplinary actions in Bloodworth's file and employment status to reflect "resigned for personal reason." Bloodworth is responsible for State, Federal, and Social Security taxes on the settlement. See: Bloodworth v. Texas Department of Criminal Justice, U.S.D.C. (S.D. Tex.), Case No. 4:02-cv-00200.
