Missouri Prison Nurse Sentenced
to 12 Years for Poisoning Husband

On June 25, Amy Murray, a 46-year-old former prison nurse in Miller County, received a 12-year sentence after she entered an Alford plea—a guilty plea in which the defendant maintains innocence—around charges related to poisoning her husband, Joshua, and setting fire to their home.

Seven years ago, in December 2018, Joshua Murray’s body was found in the couple’s burned bedroom. Medical examiners discovered he had antifreeze in his system and injuries on his body, which led them to rule his death a homicide. Not long after Joshua’s killing, according to court documents, investigators also learned that Amy Murray had developed an intimate relationship with Eugene Claypool, a prisoner at her workplace, the Jefferson City Correctional Center.

Claypool, serving a 25-years to life sentence for slaying a lottery winner, was recorded in multiple phone calls with Murray before and after her husband’s death. Murray discussed “not wanting to be around her husband” and told Claypool that they could get married now that Joshua was “out of the picture,” People reported. Following Murray’s arrest, she posted a $750,000 bail and spent years fighting the charges against her, at one point filing a motion claiming that her husband had ingested the antifreeze himself.
