Eight Detainees Escape from Louisiana Jail, Captured in 24 Hours
In yet another recent jail escape in Louisiana, eight detainees fled from the River Bend Detention Center in East Carroll Parish, a rural area that borders Arkansas and Mississippi. The detainees ranged in age from 19 to 31, and most were being held on pretrial charges that include second-degree murder. They were identified as: Savion Wheeler, 21, Hugo Molina, 27, Trenton Taplin, 29, Kolin Loney, 21, Kevin Slaughter Jr., 25, Destin Brogan, 22, Krisean Salines, 21, and Kopelon Vicknair, 19.
Officials did not disclose how the men escaped nor how they located the detainees or where they were arrested, according to the Associated Press. The East Carroll Parish escape is the third jailbreak in the state in less than a year. In May 2025, ten detainees escaped from the main jail in New Orleans by climbing through a hole behind a toilet. On the wall above the toilet, the detainees wrote “We Innocent” and “To (sic) easy LOL.” [See: PLN, July 2025, p.18.]
More recently, in December, three detainees broke through a crumbling wall at the St. Landry parish jail in Opelousas. The detainees then used sheets and other items to scale a separate outside wall. Both previous escapes were possible because the jails were allowed to become severely deteriorated.
