The Seattle Times reports that the Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) at Walla Walla now has 1,970 prisoners and is expected to house about 2,600 by this summer. This is a record of overcrowding at a prison long characterized for its overcrowding.Remodeling is now taking place for it to house 1,936 prisoners (which sounds like closing the barn door after the cows have left). Most cells are now filled by four prisoners that were originally intended for two.
