$144,134 Paid in Male WA Guard's Sexual Harassment Suit

Rodney Shaw was an African American guard at the McNeil island Corrections
Center in Steilacoom, Washington who was subjected to harassment and
belittlement in front of prisoners by white guards. He also alleged he was
sexually harassed by a female supervisor who would expose herself in a
sexually graphic manner and rub herself against Shaw while making rude
remarks. Shaw reported the sexual harassment, but after a cursory
investigation he was again reassigned to the female supervisor, who would
attempt to humiliate Shaw and make his working conditions miserable. As a
result, Shaw took a leave of absence and had to see a psychiatrist. On
June 21, 1996, the court approved a settlement of $78,663 in damages for
Shaw; $61,795 in attorney fees and $3,676.20 in costs. Shaw was
represented by Tyler Firkins of Bellevue, Washington. See: Shaw v. State
of Washington, Pierce County Superior Court, Case No. 94-2-01696-8.
