$2,150 Awarded to Missouri Prisoner Attacked by Guard

State prisoner Terrell Raney at the Potosi Correctional Center in Missouri was awarded $2,150 in United States District Court, Eastern District of Missouri, against prison guard Jason Crawford, who assaulted him on October 2, 2006 during a housing location change, and against another guard, Keith Hayes, who stood by and did nothing to stop the assault. Raney was being relocated to another two-man cell and was put in his new cell with a cellmate who was an enemy. Raney pretested and was being moved to another cell when, according to Raney, Crawford attacked him, knocked him down and stepped on his neck. Raney suffered cuts and bruises.

In his suit, Raney alleged excessive use of force. Crawford asserted that Raney started the incident with an attempted head-butt. On February 24, 2011, a jury awarded Raney $1,000 from Crawford and $1,150 from Hayes. See: Raney v. Potosi Corr. Cntr., U.S.D.C. (E.D. Mo.), Case no. 4:07-cv-01150-CDP.
