Beating by Kentucky Jail Guards Results in $1,150,000 Jury Verdict

A federal jury awarded a Kentucky man $1,150,000 for a beating during arrest.

Mr. Sosa, a Hispanic man suffering from AIDS, was arrested and charged with public intoxication. While confined in the jail, Sosa was kicked, handcuffed to a bench, and denied use of a toilet. The public intoxication charge was later dismissed.

Sosa sued in federal court. The Jefferson County Department of Corrections and three guards were found liable, and Sosa was awarded compensatory damages of $1 million, and punitive damages of $150,000, for a total award of $1,150,000. See: Sosa v. Jefferson County, USDC No. C-95-229 (WDKY April 1996) (1996 WL 385975).
