Michigan County Settles Suicide Suit For $150,000

In January 1997, Eaton County, Michigan, paid $150,000 to settle with the
estate of a woman who committed suicide in the county jail.

While imprisoned in the Eaton County Jail in January 1995, Mullins, a wife
and the mother of four minor children, hung herself. Her estate sued the
County claiming it was negligent for failing to place her on suicide watch
despite previous suicide attempts and for not maintaining the jail in a
safe condition. The settlement included $88,784 for loss of consortium and
$61,216 in other damages. See: Mullins v. Eaton County, 56th Judicial
Circuit Court of Michigan, Case No. 97-63-NO.
