Wisconsin Jail Settles Escape Lawsuit with Escapee

In September, 2001, Wausau Insurance, the insurer for the city of Shawano, Wisconsin, agreed to pay Nicholas Bishop, 22, $5,000 to settle a lawsuit Bishop had filed against the city in federal court in Madison.

The lawsuit claimed that two city policemen negligently allowed Bishop to escape from custody on August 7, 1999, while he was being taken to a local hospital.

Bishop led police on a high-speed chase and was injured when police shot him. Bishop was later convicted of fleeing a police officer and reckless endangerment and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Bishop and his parents then filed suit claiming that police negligence had allowed him to escape. The suit originally sought $500,000 in damages.
