Ohio Finds Guards and Medical Staff Failed to Render Life-Saving CPR to Detainee

State inspectors from the Ohio Bureau of Adult Detention reversed their previous findings, concluding that Cuyahoga County Jail staff and contracted MetroHealth medical personnel committed a fatal failure by not performing CPR immediately on 41-year-old Jennifer Wade.

Discovered unresponsive on her cell floor in February 2025, Wade was left unassisted for hours by guards who assumed she was pretending to be unconscious. Body-camera footage obtained by journalists revealed that over 20 minutes passed before anyone initiated resuscitation efforts after the arrival of a MetroHealth nurse.

The state’s secondary review completed in early August 2026 exposed widespread staff negligence. Despite all twelve responding staffers holding Red Cross CPR certifications, not a single guard or medical worker rendered life-saving chest compressions or assisted breathing. Union representatives defended the inaction, asserting that guards are instructed merely to call medical staff and wait. Making the issue worse, county officials quietly enacted a policy in June 2026 mandating that sheriff’s department staff perform CPR only when outside the jail facility.

Wade’s death marks the third time in just over a year that Cuyahoga County jail staff failed to administer CPR to a dying prisoner. State records reveal a pattern of non-compliance, with jail administrators failing to meet mandatory CPR training requirements in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025.

Akron attorney Alex Bodiford filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the county and Sheriff Herold Pretel in April 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio (Cleveland division), citing the failure to render aid as “gross negligence.” Bodiford claimed that even “Ray Charles could see something was wrong there.”
